Gift card regions explained: how locks work by brand

Nine out of ten refund disputes in gift card reselling come down to one word: region. A code that is perfectly valid simply refuses to redeem on the buyer's account, the buyer blames the seller, and the seller eats the loss. This guide explains how region locks actually work brand by brand, how to read the region codes in our catalog and how to make wrong-region refunds a problem you simply do not have.

Why region locks exist at all

Publishers price digital goods per market: a game that costs $59.99 in the US may cost the equivalent of $25 in Turkey, and local taxes, currencies and payment agreements differ everywhere. Region locks are how platforms keep those price zones separate — without them, everyone would buy everything in the cheapest market. For a reseller this means one physical product name, like a Steam wallet code, is really a family of separate products, one per region, and they are not interchangeable.

How the locks differ by brand

Roblox: officially regional, practically forgiving

Roblox sells cards in regional variants — in our catalog you will see US and EU categories side by side. Officially a card should be redeemed in the region where it was issued; in practice the platform is among the more forgiving ones, and US-denominated cards are the default global choice. The catch is currency: a card credits Roblox balance in its own currency, and Robux packages are priced per currency, so a euro card on a dollar account produces confusing values. The safe rule: match the card's currency to what the buyer's account already uses.

Steam: it is about wallet currency

Steam wallet codes are denominated in a currency, and that currency must be compatible with the account's store region. A $10 USD wallet code redeems cleanly on accounts whose store currency is the US dollar; on accounts priced in other currencies it either refuses or is not intended to work. This bites hardest with CIS accounts, whose stores run in rubles, tenge or hryvnia — for those buyers a foreign-currency code is the wrong product entirely, and direct wallet top-up by login is the tool built for the job. Ask one question before selling: what currency does your Steam store show?

PlayStation: the strictest lock in the business

PSN cards are hard-locked to the store region of the account: a US card redeems only on a US-region PSN account, full stop. There is no conversion, no grace, and support will not move balance across regions. Since a PSN account's country cannot be changed after creation, the buyer's region is fixed forever — which makes PSN both the riskiest brand for a careless seller and the easiest one to sell safely, because a single question removes all doubt. Never sell a PSN card without confirming the account region in writing.

Apple and Google Play: the account's country decides

Apple and Google Play cards redeem only on accounts whose country setting matches the card's country. Both platforms make switching country deliberately painful: remaining balance, subscriptions and purchases block the change, so a buyer cannot just flip their account to Germany for one card. Treat these two like PSN: one country, one product. A US Apple card is for US Apple IDs — no exceptions worth testing at the customer's expense.

Netflix: country of issue, country of use

Netflix gift cards work in the country where they were issued, and subscription pricing differs per country, so a card from a cheap market will not stretch further on an expensive-market account — it simply will not apply. Netflix has also been tightening cross-border account rules for years, so the honest sales pitch is strictly domestic: sell each card to viewers in its own country.

How to read region codes in our catalog

Every product in the RSC catalog carries its region in the category name — Roblox US and Roblox EU are separate categories with separate prices, as are Steam wallet US and EU, and so on across PlayStation, Xbox, Apple, Google Play, Amazon and Nintendo. The full catalog spans 500+ gift card categories across all regions, and each category page states the region and currency of the codes it delivers.

  • US, EU, UK, TR and similar codes: the code redeems on accounts of that region or store currency — treat the label as a hard constraint unless the brand section above says otherwise.
  • Global: redeemable regardless of account region. Genuinely global products are rarer and priced accordingly, but they are the safest listing for a mixed audience.
  • Currency is part of the product: a 10 EUR and a $10 card of the same brand are different SKUs with different wholesale prices — never present one as the other.
  • When a category name leaves you unsure, ask support at @supportresellcodes before buying, not after the customer has failed to redeem.

How resellers avoid refund disputes

Region disputes are almost never about fraud — they are about a missing question. The fix is a short procedure that costs you thirty seconds per order and pays for itself with the first prevented refund.

  • Put the region in the listing title itself — "Roblox $10 (US)" — not in a description nobody reads.
  • Before delivery, confirm the buyer's account region or store currency with one templated question, and keep the answer.
  • Deliver codes with a timestamped screenshot or delivery log, so "code was already used" claims can be checked against facts.
  • Publish a plain-language policy: a code redeemed or region-mismatched by the buyer's own account choice is not a refund case.
  • Know your supplier's terms: RSC replaces invalid codes reported within 24 hours if unused — but a valid code bought for the wrong region is not an invalid code. That distinction is exactly what your one confirmation question protects.

Tip

Save one clarifying question per brand as a chat template: "Which country is your PSN account registered in?", "What currency does your Steam store show?". Sellers who ask before delivering report region disputes near zero; sellers who skip it fund their buyers' geography lessons out of margin.

Cheat sheet: one line per brand

  • Roblox — match the card currency to the account; US cards are the default, EU for euro accounts.
  • Steam — match the wallet code currency to the store currency; CIS accounts need direct top-up by login instead of codes.
  • PlayStation — exact account region only; confirm in writing every time.
  • Xbox — region-tied like PSN in most markets; confirm the account country before selling.
  • Apple / Google Play — the account's country setting decides; switching countries is blocked by balances and subscriptions.
  • Amazon — locked to the marketplace (amazon.com vs amazon.de are different products).
  • Netflix — country of issue only; sell domestically.

The takeaway

Region locks are not a trap — they are a filter that rewards sellers who ask one question more than their competitors. Learn the five brand patterns above, mirror the region codes from the catalog into your own listings, and confirm the buyer's region before every delivery. Browse the full catalog to see every region variant with live wholesale prices, and check the FAQ for replacement terms before you write your own refund policy.
